When you are right you are right

This report was just presented by a blue ribbon commission looking into the threat of an EMP attack on the US launched from a ship offshore. I posted The End of the City on the Hill (see below) two years ago. I have noted on more than one occasion that we are living in a bad Tom Clancy novel and the US does not necessarily have to win.

We live in a dangerous world with irrational actors who despise and hate this country for the sin of our existence, our success, our democracy, our rule of law and our egalitarian pluralism. In their minds, we should not be possible; so we are deemed evil and must be destroyed. The sentence has already been passed, our enemies are working on the summary execution.

Today in Lebanon, there is dancing in the streets over the freedom for a man who bashed in a little girl's head in with a rifle butt. Hezbollah is the foremost expression of Iran's global ambitions. They are deadly, they are evil incarnate and they are ready for war.

The question is not when war will break out in the middle east but when.

If you think oil prices are high now, wait until Iran has the bomb and tells us what they are.

George Bush will go down in history as the founder of a modern era of global progress shielded by American might or the idiot who threw civilization to the mercy of the new barbarians.

In the next six months the fate of the world will be decided.

Not quite. We're not despised for what we are, which is not significantly different than, say, what Liechtenstein is (although in Liechtenstein the rule of law and egalitarian pluralism are a bit more respected than here). You don't see Liechtenstein in al-Qaeda's scope. We're despised because of what we do. Overseas. And who we hang out with. Examples: Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, pretty much the world's last remaining tyrannies.

Pierre, thanks for your comment. I must disagree with your conclusion because it does not accurately reflect the reality in the Arab world.

The real reason we are despised- the billions spent by the regimes you mentioned in which their intelligencia always blames the US and never themselves.

I think we can agree that US support for Jordan doesn't rile too many mideast feathers. No democracy to be sure but definitely not an open air dungeon like Libya or Syria. Algeria's government's method of creation is problematic- taking their side against the al Qiada backed opposition is an easy call. Our friendship with the Saudis is based on oil and geostrategic need; there are no moral or ideological bonds with those despots. Yes we support the worthless regime of Mubarak for the terrible reason that there is nothing better in Egypt. Pluralist democrats in Egypt rank behind the Muslim Brotherhood and ten other groups.

Clearly the Arab world is a mess. Where is the light shining? Iraq, believe it or not, the war is dying down a real democracy, that one day may actually be worth the trillion we have put into it, is emerging. This I submit is the hope of the whole Arab world. Nor is this an accident, Hamid Karzai and PM Maliki are the prototypes for a future hope of an Islamic world focused on human development and democracy.
